Women in the wheelhouse make maritime history in male-dominated industry

One of those women is Jeanine Drummond, who has been in the maritime industry for about 20 years and was the first woman to hold the harbour master position in Newcastle.

She is also the co-founder of the Women in Maritime support network.

She said women made up an estimated 1 to 2 percent of those in seafaring roles and up to 10 percent of those working in the port sector and there would still be male seafarers who have not worked with women.
